Gideon Barnes
The gravesites of Gideon Barnes and his wife, Huldah, located in the eastern section of Greenwood Cemetery

Gideon Barnes was born in Southampton County, Virginia on December 2, 1791. Early in life he came to Jones County, Georgia, where he married his first wife, Sarah Crawford Raiford. In 1826 they located to Pike County (now Lamar), to the unsettled area which we know today as Barnesville. Barnes bought his first propertywith the money he obtained from the sale of a horse. It was purchased from a white man by the name of Jenks. He built a double log house with a floor of hewn logs at the intersection of two Indian trails here, and at least initially appears to have traded with Indians as they passed through the area. Later additions to this first residence converted the structure into a tavern, around which the town began to grow. He is said to have brought the first chickens to thearea, and established a stage line between our town and Columbus, on the Chattahoochee River.Barnes and his wife Sarah had five children. In later years, Barnes is said to have built a substantial hotel here, which was destroyed by fire in 1884.
When Sarah Barnes died in 1861, she was buried in an oldcemetery near the Methodist Church. At some later time, a number of the bodies there were re-located to the Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Barnes' body was notmoved, and todaylies beneath the present-day Lamar County Courthouse.
Gideon Barnes married Mrs. J.L. Aldridge, of Perry, in 1862. This wife, also known as Huldah Ann Barnes, today lies next to Barnes in the Greenwood Cemetery. She outlived him by about nine years, dying in 1880.
Barnes was a Methodist and a good business man. At the time of his death, his estate was valued at $36000 dollars, a huge sum for that time. At his death, all schools and local businesses closed so thateveryone in town might have the opportunity to pay their respects.
While the weathered marble shafts above the graves have become difficult to read, a close inspection reveals the following:
Gideon Barnes- Born in Southampton County, Virginia, December 2, 1791. Removed in early life to Jones County, Georgia. Settled in Pike County, Georgia in 1826. In honor of him the town of Barnesville took its name. Died May 10, 1871. Aged 79 years, 5 months, 8 days. His end was peace. He enjoyed the full assurance of a blissful immortality.
Huldah Ann-Born September 2, 1807. Married in 1862. Died December 21, 1880. Her end was peaceful and serene. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
