Sheriff J.C. Bittick said the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident that occurred Wednesday at Monroe County Middle School which involved a toy that closely resembled a real handgun.

The student, a 13 year-old male, has been charged as a juvenile with possession of a weapon on school grounds and disruption of a public school. He was left in his mother's custody.

The Sheriff's Office was notified yesterday that a seventh grade student took a handgun to school the previous day and showed the weapon to several friends, Bittick said in a prepared statement Friday afternoon. After a preliminary investigation, MCSO investigators determined that the gun was an Airsoft gun, not an actual handgun.

Bittick said Airsoft guns use compressed air to shoot tiny plastic pellets that are similar in size and shape to BBs. Usually the guns have red tipped barrels, but the Airsoft gun that the student had did not have that.

Investigators searched the student's home and found the Airsoft gun hidden in a drawer, the Sheriff concluded.
